Is Your PPPoE Data Secure? Can Others Steal Your Internet Connection?

Many people wonder if their PPPoE data is safe from being stolen and used by others to access the Internet. The answer may surprise you.

PPPoE, or Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet, requires three pieces of information: username, password, and MAC address if binding is enabled by your ISP. If someone were to obtain these details, they could potentially use your PPPoE data to gain access to the Internet.

In fact, I decided to put this to the test with my neighbor, who is connected to the same ISP. I was able to obtain their username, password, and MAC address. I then spoofed their MAC address and initiated a PPPoE connection using their credentials. As a result, I was able to use their IP address and access the Internet.

However, it’s important to note that in order for this to work, the PPPoE session of the rightful user must first be shut down. Only one PPPoE session can be active at a time.

As for the security of PPPoE logins, they are not encrypted by default. This means that if someone were able to intercept your PPPoE login, they could potentially gain access to your username and password. It’s always a good idea to use a secure and unique password for your PPPoE connection to minimize the risk of unauthorized access.
